FORT WAYNE, IND. — Aunt Millie’s Bakeries said it will cut 33 production jobs at its Fort Wayne facility on May 14, citing sluggish sales and an increased focus on increasing efficiency.

In making the job cuts, Aunt Millie’s, which makes wholesale and private label bread at the plant under the Aunt Millie’s, Sunbeam, Schafer, Holsum and Hillbilly brands, said it will eliminate two of four baking shifts.

The 109-year-old company employed 113 prior to the job cuts, and while it intends to bake on the same days, it will do so with fewer workers producing less. Drivers will not be affected because deliveries will still be made to the same retailers, the company said.

Aunt Millie’s employs about 2,000 workers in seven bakeries and 46 branch offices in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois.
