MIAMI — Burger King Corp. is launching a breakfast meal for children that meets nutrition criteria set forth through the Council of Better Business Bureau’s Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative. The meal, which will be available beginning July 26, includes a new BK Kids Breakfast Muffin Sandwich served with BK Fresh Apple Fries and Minute Maid apple juice. The meal has a suggested retail price of $3.38.

“Offering a kids meal for breakfast that meets our strict nutrition criteria empowers our guests to make menu choices that work best for their dietary needs and lifestyles,” said John Schaufelberger, senior vice-president of global product marketing and innovation at Burger King. “This new addition to our nutritionally-balanced Kids Meals now provides families even more choices at breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

The BK Kids Breakfast Muffin Sandwich joins three existing BK Kids Meals that meet the C.B.B.B.’s nutrition criteria, which is defined as:

• No more than 560 calories per meal;
• Less than 30% of calories from fat;
• No added trans fat;
• No more than 10% of calories from added sugars;
• No more than 600 mg of sodium; and
• A “good source” or “excellent source” of at least two of the following nutrients: calcium, fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamin E.

The announcement comes a week after Burger King Restaurants of Canada, Inc. said it will limit sodium to 600 mg in all of the BK Kids Meals advertised to children under age 12.
