BOULDER, COLO. — Boulder Canyon Natural Foods, a unit of Inventure Foods, is introducing a single-serve compostable package in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22. The new 2-oz compostable bag of Boulder Canyon’s Totally Natural kettle chips is available with a suggested retail price of $1.29 per package.
The Boulder Canyon compostable packaging is made from wood pulp sourced from plantations that have Forestry Stewardship Council or similar certification. Additionally, the materials used in the bag are certified to meet the “Specification for Compostable Plastics” standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials. The bags may be composted in home or industrial composters, recycled through approved organic recycling programs, or incinerated at modern incineration plants, Boulder Canyon said.
“Boulder Canyon is committed to empowering individuals to be good global citizens and to live a healthier lifestyle,” said Steve Sklar, senior vice-president of marketing for Boulder Canyon. “Our new single-serve compostable package will help reduce landfill waste one bag at a time.”
Earlier this year, PepsiCo, Inc., Purchase, N.Y., launched a redesigned, biodegradable packaging for its SunChips brand. The redesigned packaging featured a rubbery adhesive between the two layers to act as a sound barrier and solve the noise issue that led the company to reduce its first effort to offer some of its snack products in biodegradable packaging. PepsiCo first introduced the new packaging concept in April 2009 to much fanfare. The packaging is made with polylactic acid, a plant-based material, and the initial launch was under the company’s SunChips brand.
