WASHINGTON — Glenn Black, director of science operations and food production for the Grocery Manufacturers Association, has been named chair of the newly formed Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance Steering and Executive Committee.

“G.M.A. has always been a leader in food safety education and training, and our involvement in this area continues to grow as the food industry evolves into a manufacturing base with more local and international production facilities and global ingredient sourcing,” said Leon Bruner, chief science officer for the G.M.A. “We’re honored to be chairing the alliance and hope that our extensive experience in food safety will help the alliance in its mission to train and educate a broad array of stakeholders on compliance with the new F.S.M.A. preventive controls requirements.

“Glenn’s extensive experience in food safety science along with his considerable expertise in food safety training and education make him an excellent choice to lead the alliance. We’re confident that the education and training materials that are developed by the alliance will help industry — particularly small- and medium-size companies — comply with the new preventive control rules.”

The F.S.P.C.A. was developed in December by the Food and Drug Administration in cooperation with the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Institute for Food Safety and Health to develop training courses and materials on preventing contamination of human and animal food during production.
