GREENFIELD, MASS. — U.S. organic food sales grew 15.8% in 2008 to reach $22.9 billion, according to the Organic Trade Association, which made available its 2009 Organic Industry Survey on May 4. Organic food sales accounted for 3.5% of all U.S. food product sales.

U.S. sales of organic products, both food and non-food, were $24.6 billion in 2008, a 17.1% growth over 2007 sales. That number included organic non-food sales, which increased 39.4% to $1.648 billion in 2008.

The Liberman Research Group conducted the survey on behalf of the O.T.A., based in Greenfield.

According to the O.T.A.’s 2007 Manufacturer Survey, U.S. organic food sales in 2006 were $16.718 billion, which accounted for 2.8% of all U.S. food sales.
