WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.8 billion lbs in October, up 3.3% from October 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for September 2010 was revised to 14.5 billion lbs, up 3.7% from September 2009, and this represented an increase of 6 million lbs from the previous month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,767 lbs in October, up 47 lbs from the October 2009 average. There were 8.37 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 52,000 head more than in October 2009 and unchanged from September 2010.
