WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose in October while whole wheat bread eased, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 140.7c, up 2.1c per lb from September and up 1.5c from October 2009. At 140.7c, white pan bread was at its highest average price since it was 141.3c in May 2009.

On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 6.3c in the South and up 4.3c in the Midwest — and fell in one region — down 2.3c in the West. The B.L.S. did not report an average price for one region, the Northeast, during the month.

At 174.3c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 3.1c per lb from September and down 15c per lb from October 2009.

The national average price of family flour in October was 47.2c per lb, down 1.1c from September and down 2.8c from October 2009.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in October was 115.3c per lb, up 0.5c from September but down 1.5c from October 2009. Chocolate chip cookies were 323.1c per lb, up 1.4c from September but down 2.2c from October 2009.
