WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread fell in July, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 136c, down 2.3c per lb from June and down 3.1c from July 2009. It was the third time in four months that the average price has posted a decline. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 3.3c in the West and up 0.1c in the Midwest — and fell in two regions — down 6.7c in the South and down 3.9c in the Northeast.

At 175.5c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 1.3c per lb from June and down 12c per lb from July 2009. The retail price has now fallen 6.6c per lb in the past three months.

The national average price of family flour in July was 48.4c per lb, unchanged from June but down 3.5c from July 2009.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in July was 110.3c per lb, down 1.4c from June and down 9.5c from July 2009. Chocolate chip cookies were 317.3c per lb, down 12.2c from June but up 5.3c from July 2009.
