WASHINGTON — September production of edible nonfat dry milk was 103,870,000 lbs, down 10% from August and down 5% from September 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report.

Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk were 150,897,000 lbs, down 10% from August but up 8% from September 2010. September nonfat dry milk shipments were 116,397,000 lbs, down 10% from August and down 11% from last year.

Output of skim milk powders was 35,593,000 lbs, down 8% from August but up 104% from a year earlier. Total dry whey production was 77,112,000 lbs, down 3% from August and down 1% from September 2010. Production of lactose was 83,063,000 lbs, up slightly from 82,902,000 lbs in August and up 6% from September 2010. Whey protein concentrate production totaled 35,591,000 lbs in September, up slightly from 35,554,000 lbs in August but down 1% from September 2010. Dry buttermilk outturn was 7,284,000 lbs, up 11% from August and up 32% from a year earlier.

Total manufacturers stocks of dry whey on Sept. 30, 2011, were 43,277,000 lbs, down 2% from August but up 4% from September 2010. Total lactose stocks were 68,179,000 lbs, up 1% from August but down 21% from September 2010. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 38,053,000 lbs, down 1% from August but up 18% from September 2010. Dry buttermilk stocks totaled 12,830,000 lbs, down 21% from August but up 49% from September 2010.

Butter production in September 2011 was 137,611,000 lbs, up 4% from August and up 21% from September 2010.

Total cheese production in September was 867,299,000 lbs, down slightly from 868,906,000 lbs in August and down 1% from September 2010.

Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 67,173,000 gallons, down 13% in August and down 7% from September 2010. Low-fat ice cream production was 33,972,000 gallons, down 16% from August but up 3% from September 2010.
