WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread increased in April, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 142c, up 0.5c per lb from March and up 5.7c from April 2010. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in one region — up 5.9c in the Midwest — and fell in two regions — down 3.5c in the South and down 0.3c in the West.

At 192.9c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 3.4c per lb from March and was up 10.8c per lb from April 2010. The price now has risen 6.5c per lb over the past two months and, at 192.9c per lb, was at its highest level since March 2009.

The national average price of family flour in April was 50c per lb, down 0.8c from March but up 2.7c from April 2010.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in April was 117.3c per lb, down 2.4c from March but up 4.1c from April 2010. Chocolate chip cookies were 328.8c per lb, up 6.9c from March and up 15c from April 2010.
