WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose sharply while the price paid for whole wheat bread decreased in May, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 147.2c, up 5.2c per lb from April and up 11.3c from May 2010. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in all three regions: up 19c in the West, up 3.7c in the South and up 0.4c in the Midwest.

At 191.1c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 1.8c per lb from April but up 12.5c per lb from May 2010.

The national average price of family flour in May was 52.1c per lb, up 2.1c from April and up 3.6c from May 2010.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in May was 123.1c per lb, up 5.8c from April and up 13.9c from May 2010. Chocolate chip cookies were 321.9c per lb, down 6.9c from April and down 5.2c from May 2010.
