WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.4 billion lbs in July, up 0.8% from July 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for June was revised to 15.4 billion lbs, up 1.3% from June 2010 but a decrease of 5 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,824 lbs in July, down 5 lbs from July 2010. There were 8.47 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 93,000 head more than in July 2010 and 8,000 head more than in June 2011.
