WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread increased while the price for whole wheat bread fell sharply in July, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 151.3c, up 2.3c per lb from June and up 15.3c from July 2010. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 6.7c in the Midwest and up 3c in the South — and fell in one region — down 4c in the West.
At 185c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 8.8c per lb from June but up 9.5c per lb from July 2010. It was the lowest average price for whole wheat bread since October 2010.
The national average price of family flour in July was 53.3c per lb, up 0.5c from June and up 4.9c from July 2010. The price was up in one region — up 2.6c in the Midwest — and down in two regions — down 0.7c in the West and down 0.2c in the South.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in July was 126.9c per lb, up 2.1c from June and up 16.6c from July 2010. Chocolate chip cookies were 334.6c per lb, up 2.9c from June and up 17.3c from July 2010. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 71.6c per lb, down 3.9c from June and down 3.3c from July 2010.
