ANAHEIM, CALIF. — Kind Healthy Snacks is targeting young consumers with the launch of Kind Kids, a line of chewy granola bars made with oats, sorghum and quinoa. Unveiled at Natural Products Expo West, the products are gluten-free and contain 25% less sugar than the leading children's granola bar, according to the company. Flavors include chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate chip and honey oat.

The introduction of Kind Kids follows last year's launch of Kind Fruit Bites, a no-added-sugar take on traditional fruit snacks. Kind Kids bars are slated to hit major retailers in May with a suggested retail price of $3.49 to $3.99 per 6-count box.

"As Kind revolutionized the bar category with our nutrient-dense, whole nut and fruit bars, it enabled people to have a more nutritious, great tasting snack," said Stephanie Perruzza, registered dietician and health and wellness specialist at Kind. "With Kind Kids, we feel that parents are now able to make that same healthier and great tasting snacking choice for their kids."

Kind is one of several bar brands tapping into the children's snack space. At Expo West, protein bar brand thinkThin, a division of Glanbia, debuted thinkKids bars in chocolate chip and peanut butter cup varieties. The products are gluten-free with 7 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber and 4 grams of sugar.

Orgain, a maker of protein powders and shakes, is launching OrgainKids bars, which are vegan, soy-free and gluten-free and claim to contain half the sugar and twice the fiber of traditional children's bars.

From the Power Crunch brand of protein energy bars comes Snap Stick, a range of children's protein snacks in flavors such as chocolate, peanut butter honey, french vanilla creme, red velvet and birthday cake. The products contain 10-11 grams of whey protein and 4-5 grams of sugar.

RXBAR, now owned by Kellogg Co., introduced its RXBAR Kids range of children's protein bars last year. In berry, chocolate chip and apple cinnamon raisin varieties, the products feature egg whites, almonds, cashews and dates. The company highlighted a new peanut butter and jelly inspired variety at Expo West
