WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread declined 2.8c per lb in April, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Meanwhile, the price of whole wheat bread also fell, declining 2.3c per lb in the month.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 128.1c, down 2.8c per lb from March and down 4.7c from April 2017. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in April decreased in three regions — down 6.6c in the Northeast, down 4.6c in the West and down 2.8c in the South — and increased in one region — up 1.6c in the Midwest.

At 201.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 2.3c per lb from March but up 0.2c per lb from April 2017.

The national average price of family flour in April was 47.2c per lb, up 0.4c from March but down 4.4c from April 2017.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in April was 117.6c per lb, down 1.1c from March and down 9.5c from April 2017. Chocolate chip cookies were 332.8c per lb, down 25.1c from March and down 7.6c from April 2017. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 68.5c per lb, up 0.3c from March but down 0.1c from April 2017.
