WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration has extended a comment period for its nutrition innovation strategy by 45 days, or until Oct. 11, according to the Aug. 22 issue of the Federal Register. The notice of a public meeting and comment period appeared in the June 27 issue of the Federal Register, with the F.D.A. initially saying it would receive comments until Aug. 27.

The multi-year nutrition innovation strategy involves issues such as a possible standard icon to denote the claim “healthy” on food labels, the review strategy for evaluating qualified health claims, possible new or enhanced labeling statements or claims to facilitate innovation to produce healthier foods, and modernizing the standards of identity to provide more flexibility in developing healthier foods.
