VERO BEACH, FLA. — The Food and Drug Administration has issued a “no objection” letter concerning the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status of Lentein plant protein, according to Parabel USA, Inc., which produces the ingredient.

Lentein is derived from a water lentil (Lemnaceae) that doubles its biomass in 24 to 36 hours and may be harvested every day. Lentein contains levels of essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids that are comparable to the levels in whey, according to Vero Beach-based Parabel USA. Lentein also contains omega-3 fatty acids, lutein and dietary fiber, and it is free of food allergens.

Lentein Complete, a green protein powder, has been formulated in chips, crackers, snack mixes, bars, cereal clusters, protein shakes, sports drinks and meal replacements.
