WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread increased 0.9c per lb in August, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Meanwhile, the price of whole wheat bread also increased, rising 3.7c per lb in the month.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 130.2c, up 0.9c per lb from July but down 4.6c from August 2017. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in August increased in two regions — up 4.5c in the West and up 3c in the South — and fell in two regions — down 2.7c in the Midwest and down 1.3c in the Northeast.

At 193.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 3.7c per lb from July but down 8.9c per lb from August 2017.

The national average price of family flour in August was 46.4c per lb, down 0.4c per lb from July and down 4.8c from August 2017.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in August was 122.7c per lb, up 2.3c from July but down 7.8c from August 2017. Chocolate chip cookies were 335.1c per lb, down 13c from July and down 21.7c from August 2017. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 70.5c per lb, up 1.5c from July but down 4.8c from August 2017.
