WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose 0.4c per lb in May, while the price for whole wheat bread fell 1.1c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 128.9c, up 0.4c per lb from April but down 0.4c from May 2018. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in May increased in two regions — up 1.5c in the West and up 1c in the South — declined 1.6c in the Midwest and was flat in the Northeast.

At 194.1c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 1.1c per lb from April and down 2.5c per lb from May 2018.

The national average price of family flour in May was 45.4c per lb, up 2c from April but down 1.5c from May 2018.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in May was 119.7c per lb, down 2.6c from April but up 5.4c from May 2018. Chocolate chip cookies were 335.2c per lb, down 7.4c from April and down 4.8c from May 2018. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 76.1c per lb, down 0.6c from April but up 6.3c from May 2018.
