SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NEB. — Bimbo Bakeries USA (B.B.U.) will shut down a plant in South Sioux City by October. The facility produces buns and employs 81 people.

Production at the site will be moved to other facilities in the region.

“Decisions like this are always difficult,” said David Tormena, vice-president, region operations, B.B.U. “After careful analysis and consideration, we determined it is most efficient to redistribute production to other bakeries in our system to better meet market demand.”

Mr. Tormena said the bakery will work with employees affected by the closure to discuss severance and other benefits.

According to the Sioux City Journal, this is the second B.B.U. closure for the area. Another plant was shuttered in 2014. Both sites were originally owned by Metz Baking, which was established in 1892. Before landing in B.B.U’s possession in 2010, the facilities were owned by bakeries such as Specialty Foods, Eathgrains and Sara Lee Corp.
