HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — Hans van der Maarel, longtime president of International Bakery Consulting, Ltd., died Aug. 8 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 74 years old.

Mr. van der Maarel’s career in the baking industry allowed him, in his words, “the incredible and great life that I have been allowed to live.”

Mr. van der Maarel began his career in 1970 as a field service manager with Benier BV, where he was responsible for field installations of industrial bakery equipment throughout Europe and the Middle East. He was named vice-president of Benier Canada Ltd. in 1974 and a year later was named president of Benier USA, a position he held for 13 years. He joined Gemini Bakery Equipment in 1999 as vice-president of sales and product development. He most recently had been president of International Bakery Consulting, Ltd. since January 2001, providing consulting and project management services to the baking industry.

During his career, Mr. van der Maarel was active in BEMA for more than 30 years and on the International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE) Committee for nearly 25 years. He received BEMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Survivors include his wife, Ine; two sons, Quinten (Leslie) and Vincent (Cathy); and several grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a charity that funds research, provides patient/caregiver support, conducts community outreach and advocates for increased federal research funding for those affected by pancreatic cancer.
