In 2017, the FDA approved a qualified heart health claim for commodity soybean oil. Then, in November 2018, the FDA approved a similar claim for high oleic oils, including high oleic soybean oil. These recent approvals allow for on-pack heart health messaging, which recent survey data suggest is desirable to consumers: a 2019 study conducted on behalf of QUALISOY discovered that more than half of U.S. adults look for health claims on package labels. Survey results also suggested that U.S. consumers generally agree that some oils add health benefits to foods. CPG manufacturers can tap into this consumer interest by marketing products made with heart healthy oils.
