WASHINGTON — Total commercial red meat production in the United States was down 3% from the same month of the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report.

October commercial red meat production was 4,391,100,000, which was up 3% from September but down 3% from October 2009. January–October commercial red meat production was about 41,154 million lbs, down 2% from the same period of the previous year.

Beef production was 2,275,400,000 lbs, up 2% from September but down 3% from October 2008. Total cattle slaughter was 2.89 million head, down 3% from the previous year. The average live weight was up 9 lbs from October 2008 at 1,312 lbs.

Dairy cow slaughter in October was 227,000 head, down 4% from September and from 236,000 head in October 2008. January–October dairy cow slaughter totaled 2,375,000 head, up 10% from 2,154,000 during the same period of the previous year.

Pork production in October was 2,089,100,000 lbs, up 4% from September but down 3% from the previous year. Hogs killed were down 4% from the previous year at 10.3 million head, and the average live weight was up 3 lbs from the previous year at 272 lbs.
