Bakers and snack manufacturers must ensure salters and other systems they use for placing seasonings on their products do so accurately. First, there are ingredient cost economies involved, but second, many food processors are attempting to lower the sodium content of their products by closely controlling the amount of salt deposited on them, noted Norman Searle, COO, Axis Automation, Hartland, WI.

If a processor wants to make a low-sodium claim on a product, that product must actually deliver the promoted levels and no more, he added. Depending on the type of salt being dispensed, the company’s Axis Salter offers accuracy rates within 1% across the width of the conveyor, Mr. Searle said.

At the core of the salter is a precison-machined metering valve that ensures precise measurement of the salt being dispensed.
