Omega-3 ingredient gains more E.U. approval

The omega-3 fatty acid ingredient life’sDHA will be cleared for use in bakery products, cereal bars and beverages in 27 member states of the European Union following a unanimous positive vote from the E.U.’s Standing Committee On The Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH), Martek Biosciences, Columbia, Md., said July 17.
Previously, the E.U. had cleared the ingredient’s use in breakfast cereals, spreadable fat and dressings, dairy products (excluding milk-based and milk analogue drinks) and food supplements. The new vote allows for its use in milk-based and milk analogue drinks. The draft commission decision now will pass into the formal procedure before anticipated publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Manufactured by Martek Biosciences, life’sDHA features a form of omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that is derived from microalgae. Studies have shown DHA to be a primary building block for the brain and the eyes and to support brain, eye and cardiovascular health.
