OMAHA — ConAgra Foods Inc. is closing its Hamburg, Iowa, microwave popcorn facility in October and will transfer all popcorn manufacturing to other ConAgra Foods popcorn facilities. The Hamburg plant produces Orville Redenbacher’s and ACT II microwave popcorn.
The separate bulk popcorn processing and packaging in Hamburg will remain open, said Teresa Paulsen, a spokesperson for ConAgra.
Ms. Paulsen said the closing will affect 95 employees, while about 45 employees will continue to work at the Hamburg bulk popcorn facility.
“We wish this decision was not necessary, especially given the challenges the Hamburg community has faced this summer,” said Chris Whitehair, vice-president of operations for the snacks platform at ConAgra Foods. “Our people in Hamburg have worked hard to maintain normal operations in the midst of historic flooding. Nevertheless, we needed to find a way to run our popcorn network more efficiently, and this was the most economically viable option.”
