WASHINGTON — Sharp price moves occurred in the average price paid for both white pan bread and whole wheat bread during October, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 139.2c, up 5.2c per lb from September but down 0.1c from October 2008. The 5.2c month-over-month gain was the sharpest since October 2007, and comes one month after the price of white pan bread reached its lowest level since February 2008, according to the B.L.S. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in all four regions — up 10.1c in the West, up 5.2c in the Midwest, up 4.6c in the South and up 0.3c in the Northeast. It marked the first time since October 2008 that all regions posted month-over-month gains.

At 189.3c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 2.7c per lb from September but down 11c per lb from October 2008.

The national average price of family flour in October was 50c per lb, down 1c from September and down 2.1c from October 2008.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in October was 116.8c per lb, up 2.7c from September but down 2.1c from October 2008. Chocolate chip cookies were 325.3c per lb, up 16.1c from September and up 22.7c from October 2008.
