WASHINGTON — July production of nonfat dry milk was up 1% from the previous year and production of skim milk powders was up 75%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products Report.
Nonfat dry milk production was 133,494,000 lbs, down 9% from 146,726,000 lbs in June but up 1% from 131,704,000 lbs in July 2010. Output of skim milk powders was 39,653,000 lbs, up 19% from 33,284,000 lbs in June and up 75% from 22,626,000 lbs a year earlier.
Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk were 192,916,000 lbs, up 2% from 189,818,000 lbs in June but down 2% from 197,395,000 lbs in July 2010. July nonfat dry milk shipments were 126,704,000 lbs, up 8% from 117,754,000 lbs in June and up 19% from 106,420,000 lbs in July 2010.
Total dry whey production was 81,859,000 lbs, down 2% from 83,914,000 lbs in June and down 7% from 87,529,000 lbs in July 2010. Production of lactose was 84,975,000 lbs, down 5% from 89,481,000 lbs in June but up 6% from 80,418,000 lbs in July 2010. Whey protein concentrate production totaled 34,928,000 lbs, down 4% from 36,549,000 lbs in June and down 4% from 36,441,000 lbs in July 2010. July dry buttermilk outturn was 6,902,000 lbs, down 8% from 7,519,000 lbs in June but up 20% from 5,736,000 lbs in July 2010.
Total manufacturers stocks of dry whey on July 31, 2011, were 47,763,000 lbs, up 3% from 46,395,000 lbs in June but down 11% from 53,749,000 lbs in July 2010. Total lactose stocks were 76,107,000 lbs, down 2% from 77,308,000 lbs in June and down 9% from 83,916,000 lbs in July 2010. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 35,796,000 lbs, up 2% from 35,212,000 lbs in June but down 6% from 37,904,000 lbs in July 2010.
Dry buttermilk stocks totaled 18,404,000 lbs, down 2% from 18,755,000 lbs in June but up 98% from 9,284,000 lbs in July 2010.
Butter production in July 2011 was 135,202,000 lbs, down 4% from 140,656,000 lbs in June but up 22% from 111,189,000 lbs in July 2010. Total cheese production in July was 859,465,000 lbs, down 4% from 894,931,000 lbs in June and down 2% from 877,239,000 lbs in July 2011.
Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 73,185,000 gallons in July, down 3% from 75,131,000 gallons in June and down 5% from 76,827,000 gallons in July 2010. Low-fat ice cream production was 40,974,000 gallons, down 6% from 43,420,000 gallons in June but up 5% from 39,148,000 gallons in July 2010.
