TORONTO — Galen G. Weston, executive chairman of Loblaw, has been named Canadian Press Business Newsmaker of the Year for 2013 by The Canadian Press, a multimedia news agency based in Toronto. The news agency recognized Mr. Weston for his role in two news stories: Loblaw’s move to acquire Shoppers Drug Mart in a C$12.4 billion deal and his reaction to a factory collapse in Bangladesh that made Joe Fresh clothing, a brand owned by Loblaw. While Loblaw, a segment of Toronto-based George Weston, Ltd., is a leading food retailer in Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart is a leading pharmacy retailer. The factory collapse in Bangladesh in April killed more than 1,100 people. Loblaw has signed onto the Accord on Fire and Building Safety and has moved ahead with financial compensation plans for workers and dependents of the company.
