WASHINGTON — The American Bakers Association has added four new members to its 2010-12 board of directors.
Howard (Robin) Alton III, president and chief executive officer of Pan-O-Gold Baking Co., has been named first vice-chairman. He succeeds Gary Prince, president of Bimbo Bakeries USA. Mr. Prince was elected first vice-chairman at the A.B.A. board of governors meeting March 14, and earlier he was chairman of the A.B.A. from 2004-06.
Taking over for Mr. Alton as second vice-chairman is Fred Penny, executive vice-president of Bimbo Bakeries USA.
“All of us at A.B.A. remain extremely grateful to Gary for his long record of leadership to A.B.A.,” said Robb MacKie, president and c.e.o. of the A.B.A. “We have greatly valued his insight and know he will continue to play an important part within our organization. Mr. Penny will prove to be an excellent successor, and we look forward to the guidance he will bring to the executive committee.”
William Paterakis, president of Northeast Foods, Inc., an affiliation of H&S Bakery, will join the A.B.A. board. He takes the place of longtime board member John Paterakis, president of H&S Bakery, who will transition off the board.
Mr. Prince and John Paterakis will continue to serve on the A.B.A. board in ex-officio roles, the A.B.A. said.
“A.B.A. is forever indebted to John Paterakis for the long service, hard work and leadership he has provided to the industry,” Mr. MacKie said. “A.B.A. would not be the strong organization it is today without Mr. Paterakis’ strong guiding hand and service. It is comforting to know that in addition to Bill, A.B.A. will still benefit from John’s perspective.”
The A.B.A. also announced Barry McLean, president of A.B.A.’s newest baker member, Canada Bread/Maple Leaf Bakery, has joined the board, while Ken Newsome, president of AMF, has joined the board as the new BEMA representative, replacing Fred Springer, president of Burford.
“Under Fred’s leadership, the relationship between A.B.A. and BEMA has grown extremely close,” Mr. MacKie said. “His dedication and devotion to the industry and A.B.A. are greatly appreciated. We welcome Ken’s participation on the A.B.A. board. He has been a strong leader for BEMA and the industry. No doubt he will ably fill Fred Springer’s large footprint to make A.B.A. and the industry stronger.”
