PLANO, TEXAS — Frito-Lay this week said it immediately will replace the fully compostable snack chip bag from five of its six SunChips flavors.

The package, where all layers are made from such materials so the package is 100% compostable, had come under fire for being too noisy due to a structure that makes the bag more rigid. Sales for SunChips had slipped more than 11% over the past 52 weeks ended Aug. 8, according to SymphonyIRI Group, a market research firm.

“We are taking these steps to improve the 100% compostable bag and address the consumer experience,” said Aurora Gonzalez, spokeswomen for Frito-Lay. “We remain committed to sustainable packaging and are now working on the next generation.”

The package, which will continue to be used for its original flavored SunChips, completely decomposes in about 14 weeks when placed in a compost pile or bin. The packaging was introduced about 18 months ago.
