WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread increased 0.1c per lb in September, while the price for whole wheat bread fell 3.9c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 134.9c, up 0.1c per lb from August and up 2c from September 2016. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in September increased in two regions — up 2.6c in the West and up 0.7c in the South — and decreased in two regions — down 3.3c in the Northeast and down 0.3c in the Midwest.
At 198.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 3.9c per lb from August but up 1.2c per lb from September 2016.
The national average price of family flour in September was 50.5c per lb, down 0.7c from August and down 4.2c from September 2016.The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in September was 129.9c per lb, down 0.6c from August but up 1c from September 2016. Chocolate chip cookies were 349.4c per lb, down 7.4c from August but up 19.4c from September 2016. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 74.1c per lb, down 1.2c from August but up 2c from September 2016.
